the u.s.a will force thousands to abandon their culture.
THE POWER OF LANGUAGE
Language is something that unifies people. It is part of our culture. Music is written in many different tongues. There is hip hop, r&b, soul, salsa, Reggae, punk rock and many more different genres. All of these genres are sung in different languages all around the world; not just English. If English becomes the official language of the United States, many of the people will be and will continue to be discriminated. Many forms of discrimination exist. But English being an official language is discrimination other people and their cultures because they have to hide their identity and culture completely to be an American. Former president Theodore Roosevelt said "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." He is accepting that immigrants should come into the United States without being discriminated. Well why shouldn’t they? This is the land of the “brave and of the free”. He continues on and says that if we come to America, we have to pledge allegiance only to America. That is forcing people who want to be Americans, to abandon their culture. Even though he forced those who wanted to come to America to pledge their allegiance to the American flag, they had to learn English and forget their native language. Many identities were lost in order to start a new one; The American one. If English becomes the official language of the United States, this will happen. Many different people will be forced to abandon their culture, in order to be an American.
ABANDONING CULTURE
Abandoning a culture should always be the choice of a person. It should never be forced. Making English the official language of the United States is costly and discriminatory. There are over 300 other languages spoken in the United States. People are going to need translators which the government will need to provide since these are residents. In addition, it will be a discriminatory act against others who do not speak the language. According to Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that “The provisions of this civil rights act forbade discrimination on the basis of sex as well as race in hiring, promoting, and firing”. Discriminating against a person who speaks a different language other than English is a crime.
The government should worry about real problems in the country. The majority of the people in this country speak English already. The people in this country will not be able to function if they can’t hold on to their unique culture and personality. In addition, the change would be costly and discriminatory. Everyone has freedom of speech; even if it’s in their native language.
